Poetry is arguably the ideal literary art form. It\u2019s cheap (pencil and paper, or a notes app), it\u2019s portable (a receipt in your wallet, the phone in your pocket), and a first draft of a sonnet-sized poem might not take more than 30 minutes. This class will help you make the most of those advantages, as we think about, read, and write poetry. We\u2019ll start by working on imagination and observation; then we\u2019ll focus on structure; finally, we\u2019ll revise and giving each other feedback on our work. By the course\u2019s end, you should have at least six new poems, three of them revised, with feedback both from the other participants and from the instructor. You should also leave with some strategies to keep writing, to keep using that poet\u2019s mind. Please expect some work outside of class each week.<\/p>\n

This class is open to writers at all levels of experience and training. All are welcome.<\/p>\n

Brad\u00a0Richard\u00a0is the author of four collections of poems, most recently\u00a0Parasite Kingdom, winner of the 2018 Tenth Gate Prize from The Word Works. His poems and reviews have been published or are forthcoming in many journals. The 2015 Louisiana Artist of the Year, he founded and directed the creative writing program at Lusher Charter School (2006-2019), and was founding director (2009-2019) of the Art & Writing Awards of South Louisiana (Art & Writing SOLA), a regional affiliate of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. He is an instructor for the Kenyon\u00a0Review’s Writers Workshop for Teachers and for NOWW. He also serves on the editorial board of The Word Works (where he is series editor for the Hilary Tham Capitol Collection) and serves on the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Williams\/New Orleans Literary Festival. Participants will submit two to three stories and receive detailed feedback from their peers and me, the instructor. We will read and discuss published stories and craft essays as a group to examine the elements of story, such as dialogue, characterization, and form. Participants will be responsible for reading and responding to the work of their peers both verbally in class and formally in writing. Participants will leave with two to three story drafts ready for revision.<\/p>\n

While no formal training is required, this course is best suited to writers with previous workshop experience.<\/p>\n

Tia Clark\u2019s fiction has appeared in American Short Fiction, Kenyon Review, The Offing and elsewhere. They have taught creative writing at Indiana University, The University of Wisconsin, and the Provincetown Council on Aging. They have received funding and residencies from the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing, The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, and the Lambda Literary Foundation. A 2019 recipient of an Elizabeth George Foundation grant, they live in New Orleans.<\/p>\n

Creative Nonfiction blends elements of fiction and essay. It is a perfect medium for students who wish to write about their own lives in ways that will be compelling for other readers. Like fiction writers, we will work on building interesting stories out of our own experiences, with attention to striking details, characterization, and effective pacing. Like essayists, we will also attempt to interpret our experience and draw lessons from it. We will use the workshop method in our class: students will bring in their own work and we will read it and critique it. Depending on class size, each student will be expected to submit original work two to three times over the course of the session. We will also read a range of published creative nonfiction, to get a sense for the possibilities of the form.<\/p>\n

While this class doesn’t require previous formal writing experience, all participants will need written material ready to submit to the workshop.<\/p>\n

C. W. Cannon has written and published fiction and nonfiction widely, mostly focused on his native New Orleans. His work has appeared in Other Voices, Third Coast, Exquisite Corpse, American Book Review, Constance, Louisiana Cultural Vistas, New Orleans Review, The Rumpus, The Lens, and the New Orleans Times-Picayune. His first novel, Soul Resin (FC2 Press, 2002), a New Orleans ghost story, was hailed by Luis Alberto Urrea as \u201ctruly original.\u201d His second novel, French Quarter Beautification Project, was published by Lavender Ink in 2016; and his third, Sleepytime Down South, by Livingston Press in 2017. His next book, a collection of essays, will be released by UL Press later this year.
He teaches writing and New Orleans Studies at Loyola University.<\/p>\n

Writing is a series of choices; the more we\u2019re aware of them, the more we can leverage them to our story\u2019s advantage. In this generative workshop designed for both fiction and non-fiction writers alike, we\u2019ll take a deep dive into six of the most critical elements all prose writers must contend with: point of view, setting, conflict & stakes, scene, dialogue, and arc. Each session will focus on a single element, examining its possibilities and importance for prose, and most importantly, how we can use these aspects to create desired effects on the page. Excerpts from contemporary authors will offer concrete examples. <\/p>\n

We\u2019ll end each week with a custom writing exercise which participants will finish for the following session. Writers can expect to leave with several new short pieces for later expansion; or if writers prefer, they may revise a passage from an existing piece of writing relevant to that week\u2019s discussion. While not a formal workshop, we\u2019ll allow time each week for casually sharing work; for the final session, participants may submit one piece from the previous weeks for written feedback from the instructor.<\/p>\n

All levels welcome. Allison teaches numerous classes for the New Orleans Writers Workshop; she also oversees NOWW\u2019s editing and manuscript consultation services through which she mentors writers one on one to develop their projects. Previously she taught fiction at the Loyola Writing Institute. Her short story \u201cOld Houses\u201d was selected for the 2014 O. Henry Prize Stories (the story originally appeared in The New Orleans Review), and has been anthologized in two college textbooks. In 2018, she was shortlisted for the Manchester Fiction Prize, one of England\u2019s largest story competitions. Other fiction has won contests from New Millennium Writings, A Room of Her Own Foundation and Philadelphia Stories. Allison has been awarded writing residencies from the Aspen Writers Foundation and the Jentel Foundation. Her non-fiction appears in the 2015 Best Food Writing; she has also written about New Orleans\u2019 food and drink scene for various local publications including, Edible New Orleans, Eater and The New Orleans Advocate.
Allison holds an M.F.A. in Fiction from Emerson College.<\/p>\n

Who says you can\u2019t write with a day job? In this five-day morning intensive, we will run through a writing practice sequence that can be replicated and individualized long after the class ends. We will start our days together by easing into a creative, safe space with a few low strain movements (deep breathing, dancing, stretching), transition into a related craft discussion, then spend the final 30 minutes writing together in response to a guided prompt. Students can expect to leave with five movements, points of craft, and prompts to get writing when life gets in the way, as well as notes or starts for five separate pieces of new writing.<\/p>\n

No formal creative writing experience necessary. Both novice and experienced writers can benefit.<\/p>\n

Jessica Kinnison directs the New Orleans Writers Workshop and regularly teaches classes centered in maintaining a writing practice and generating new work. Her work has appeared in Columbia Journal, Phoebe, Entropy, Juked, and The Southern Humanities Review, among other publications. A 2018 Kenyon Review Peter Taylor Fellow, her work has twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and her play Baby won the 2009 Southwest Theatre and Film Associations\u2019 Short Play Contest. In April 2020, she was listed in among \u201cEight New Orleans Poets to Watch\u201d in POETS & WRITERS. She holds an MFA from Chatham University in Pittsburgh where she taught creative writing in the Allegheny County Jail, as part of the Words Without Walls Program. A Mississippi native, she has taught writing at Tulane University, the Loyola Writing Institute, NOCCA, the Tennessee Williams Festival, 826! New Orleans, Orleans Parish Prison and Project Lazarus. She hosted Dogfish Reading Series in her home from 2015 to 2020 and serves on the Board of Directors for Antenna, a multidisciplinary arts organization and collective, and the New Orleans Poetry Festival.<\/p>\n

In this Lyrical Memoir workshop, writers will be moving away from linear narrative to begin to explore associative writing and how it naturally lends itself to truth and vulnerability. This course will support participants in exploring their inner world through associative writing and allow them to unravel some of the emotions they\u2019ve been moving through. Participants can expect to gain an understanding of lyrical memoir\/essay and why it\u2019s so effective at touching memory as well as a strong understanding of their unique voice. Participants will receive a prompt and a reading as a takeaway to encourage them to continue their writing beyond this workshop.<\/p>\n

No formal creative writing experience necessary. Both novice and experienced writers can benefit.<\/p>\n

Chioma Urama is a storyteller and visual artist of Igbo and African American heritage living in the Global South. Her written work is a deeply meditative process, connecting people, patterns, and ideas in efforts to heal herself and the collective. Her writing has been described as intuitive, intentional, and heart connected. Urama is a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship alumna and a graduate of the University of Miami MFA program, where she was a Michener Fellow. She taught creative writing and English composition at the University of New Orleans.<\/p>\n
